灰姑娘的形象可以上溯到很早的阶段。希腊历史学家斯特拉波（《Geographica》）曾在公元前1世纪记叙了一位嫁到埃及的希腊少女洛多庇斯的故事，这被觉得是《灰姑娘》故事的最早版本。
洛多庇斯当时已经在溪水边洗衣服，突然一只鹰飞过将她的鞋子攫去并让鞋子掉在了身在孟斐斯城的法老的脚下。法老这之后要求国内全部的女子试穿这只鞋子，看看是不是合脚，最后找到了洛多庇斯。法老爱上了洛多庇斯并娶她为妻。
这个故事后来也见于克劳狄俄斯·埃利安（Claudius Aelianus）的《史林杂俎》（Various Historia）中。
《灰姑娘》的另一个版本是中国的叶限，见于公元860年左右段成式的小说《酉阳杂俎》。
故事中勤劳可爱的叶限饲养有一条金鱼，金鱼和叶限关系亲密，只在叶限每一次走到池边时才浮上水面伸出头来。后来金鱼被叶限后母所杀，叶限按天神的指引将鱼骨堀起，并因为这个原因得以最后穿着体面的衣裳偷偷参与了某个节日盛会。
当匆忙回家时，叶限落下了一只鞋子。岛国“陀汗”的国王拾获了鞋子，并与叶限相爱娶她为妻。
除开这点中世纪的《一千零一夜》等不少作品中都拥有记叙类似的故事。
在欧洲，《灰姑娘》的最早版本名为《La Gatta Cenerentola》，也称《The Hearth Cat》，见于意大利童话采集者吉姆巴地斯达·巴西耳1635年的《五日谈》（Pentamerone）一书中。这一版本为后来法国作家夏尔·佩罗和格林兄弟的版本夯实了基础。
