故事的启动，要从孙悟空大闹天宫被镇压在五行山下500年后讲起。因为人间常常产生妖怪，大家把“孙悟空”当成他们心中的神。
一天夜里，凶险的山路上远远走来一支走路的行人，回家的父母忙着给怀里的孩子讲大闹天宫的故事，这个时候，突然产生一群山妖，把大家撕咬着甩下山去，一位母亲被山妖逼到悬崖边，只好抱着孩子跳下悬崖。
转天顺间，一位行脚僧在一条小河边喝水，发现小孩子的哭声，行脚僧把孩子从河里救下来，从此，这个孩子就与行脚僧相依为命了，行脚僧为这孩子取名“江流儿”。
山妖在长安城里横行霸道，百姓们很的恐慌，有一天，山妖来劫持童男童女，江流儿不意中就下一个小女孩，惹怒了山妖，在一路的追杀中
，江流儿带着小女孩跑到了一座大山下，又误打误撞解除了压在孙悟空身上的封印。
这时，自由的悟空只想回到它的花果山，却无奈手腕上的封印未解开，又欠江流儿的一个人情，勉强地护送他们回长安城，一路上，八戒和白龙马也因缘际化的现身。
另一边，山妖王为了抢女童，布下了夜迷局，妖王却发现解除封印的悟空法力尽失，轻而易举地抢走了女童，悟空不愿再去就女童，江流儿决定自己去就女童。
日全食那天，在悬空寺妖王准备将童男童女投入丹炉中。这时，江流儿却冲进了道场要与妖王决一死战，在混乱中，江流儿被压在乱石堆里，悟空以为江流儿已死，在巨大的愤怒中，猴子终于破除封印，成为孙大圣。
